New Holiday Rental Laws Set To Have A Major Impact On Spanish Tourist Industry Spain News

Controversial new legislation that was passed last year and which may have a major impact on the holiday rental market, looks set to be implemented here in Spain in 2014.

It is suggested that the new law, "La Ley de Medidas de Flexibilización y Fomento del Mercado del Alquiler" will be in place in the spring, just in time for the busy summer holiday period.

The law may mean that private landlords will need to obtain a licence to rent their properties from the local authority and that any owners who do not abide by the new law, will be heavily fined. It may also mean that owners will have to be more transparent when it comes to declaring their rental incomes.

The new law, according to the government, is supposed to promote greater flexibility within the private holiday rental sector which currently accounts for around 75% of all holiday rentals in Spain. Property owners have a different view though and believe the changes are due to pressure that has been put on the government by hoteliers who are aggrieved that there is greater demand within the private rental sector.

Many believe that it will have a major effect on the tourist industry here in Spain as many of the holidaymakers who come here are looking for a low-cost solution to their holiday accommodation needs. It may mean that many will no longer look to Spain for their summer break and may decide to look elsewhere.
