Deaths On Spanish Roads Plummet To An All Time Low Spain News

It has recently been announced by the DGT (Dirreción General de Tráfico), that deaths on Spain's roads has plummeted for the 10th successive year.

In 2013 there were 1,128 deaths on Spanish roads in comparison to 1,301 deaths in 2012. This represents a fall of 173 or 13.3%. Serious injuries also fell by 16% to 5,206.

On a daily basis there was an average of 3.1 deaths compared to a whopping 11.6 back in 2000.

Statistics have been recorded since 1960 when there were 1,300 fatalities, but only 1 million vehicles on the road. Today, there are some 31 million vehicles on Spanish roads and serves to indicate just how much road safety has improved over the years.

This is welcome news to start the year, but 1,128 is still far too many. Please drive carefully this year so that we can see an even bigger reduction and another year of less fatalities in 2014.
