Geriatric Medicine with Sanitas
Someone in their eighties with heart failure, arthritis, early memory trouble and eleven different medications, seen by four specialists who never speak to each other. That is the problem this specialty exists to solve.
What a geriatrician does differently
Treats the whole person rather than one condition. That sounds like a slogan until you meet someone in their eighties with heart failure, arthritis, early memory loss and eleven different medications, being seen by four specialists who do not talk to each other.
A geriatrician's job is to look at all of it together: which medications are now doing more harm than good, which conditions are driving the others, and what actually matters to the person for their remaining years.
What they deal with
Falls, and working out why they are happening. Memory problems, shared with neurology. Frailty and loss of strength. Reviewing long medication lists, which is one of the highest-value things they do. Continence. Nutrition in later life. And planning care as needs increase.
Age limits on the policy itself
Most Sanitas plans have an upper age limit for taking out a new policy, and one plan is designed for older people specifically. That question – what you can still take out, and at what age – is covered properly in healthy ageing, along with what is worth getting checked as you get older.
Waiting periods
The standard ones apply and they matter more at this stage of life, because 10 months for a hip replacement is a long time when walking is already difficult. Emergencies remain covered from day one.
See every Sanitas waiting period in one place, including how switching from another insurer waives nearly all of them.
Where the geriatricians are

- Seville – 4 clinics, 5 specialists
- Cordoba – 3 clinics, 3 specialists
- Almeria – 2 clinics, 2 specialists
