Haematology with Sanitas
Almost nobody chooses to see a haematologist. A routine blood test comes back with something out of range, and a doctor wants it looked at properly.
How most people end up here
Rarely by choice. Usually a routine blood test shows something out of range and a doctor wants it looked at properly.
The common ones: low haemoglobin, meaning anaemia; a white cell count that is too high or too low; platelets out of range; iron, B12 or folate deficiency; or a clotting result that needs explaining.
Most of these have ordinary explanations. Anaemia is very often simple iron deficiency, itself often caused by something else worth finding. The haematologist's job is as much ruling things out as finding them.
What else they handle
Clotting disorders, both the kind that clots too readily and the kind that bleeds too easily. Managing warfarin and similar blood thinners. Inherited conditions such as thalassaemia and sickle cell. And the blood cancers – leukaemia, lymphoma, myeloma – where haematology works alongside oncology.
Anaemia and moving abroad
Worth a note. Diet changes when you move country, sometimes considerably, and it is not unusual for iron or B12 levels to drift over a couple of years without anyone noticing. Persistent tiredness that you have put down to the heat or getting older is worth a blood test before you accept it.
Waiting periods
None on consultations or standard blood tests, which is most of what this specialty needs. Bone marrow tests and complex investigations carry 6 months. Anything urgent is covered from day one.
See every Sanitas waiting period in one place, including how switching from another insurer waives nearly all of them.
