Vascular Surgery with Sanitas

Whether your varicose veins are covered comes down to a single question: are they causing a problem, or do you just dislike how they look?

Varicose veins: covered or cosmetic

This is the question most people arrive with, and the answer is genuinely split.

Covered: veins causing aching, swelling, heaviness, skin changes, eczema around the ankle, or an ulcer. Also any vein that has clotted or bled. These are medical problems and treatment is covered, subject to the surgical waiting period.

Not covered: veins that look unattractive but cause no symptoms. Thread veins and spider veins are almost always classed as cosmetic.

The consultation itself is covered either way, so if you are unsure which side you fall on, book and find out. The specialist will tell you honestly, because they deal with the distinction every day.

The other reasons to see one

Poor circulation in the legs, typically cramping pain in the calves when walking that stops when you rest. Common in smokers and diabetics, and worth investigating because it signals arterial disease elsewhere too.

Deep vein thrombosis, a clot in a deep leg vein. Sudden swelling, pain and warmth in one calf. That is urgent, not an appointment.

Aneurysm screening, particularly for men over 65 with a smoking history.

Leg ulcers that will not heal.

Waiting periods

Consultations immediately. Vein treatment done as an outpatient after 3 months. Anything needing a hospital bed after 10 months. Emergencies, including suspected DVT, from day one.

See every Sanitas waiting period in one place, including how switching from another insurer waives nearly all of them.
