The Best Times of Year to Visit Spain Based on Weather

Expat Tips

Thinking about visiting Spain? With its varied climates from sunny coastlines to cooler inland cities, picking the right time of year can make or break your trip. Whether you’re looking for beach days, cultural festivals, or cooler mountain escapes, Spain has a perfect season for you. Here’s your essential guide to the best times of year to visit Spain based on weather!

Spring (March to May)

Spring is arguably one of the best times to visit Spain. Temperatures are pleasantly warm, ranging from 17°C to 24°C (63°F to 75°F), and nature is in full bloom. It's a fantastic time for city breaks in Madrid, Seville, and Granada, where you can enjoy outdoor cafes and cultural festivals without the scorching heat of summer.

Summer (June to August)

Spain’s summer is hot—sometimes very hot! Inland cities like Madrid and Cordoba can see temperatures soar above 40°C (104°F), making coastal areas like Costa del Sol, Costa Brava, and the Balearic Islands very popular. If you're a beach lover, this is your season, but be prepared for crowds and higher prices.

Autumn (September to November)

Autumn offers the perfect balance: the summer crowds have diminished, the sea remains warm for swimming, and the temperatures range between 20°C and 28°C (68°F to 82°F) early in the season. Regions like Andalusia, Valencia, and Mallorca are fantastic options for a peaceful and sunny escape.

Winter (December to February)

Winter in Spain varies dramatically depending on where you go. Coastal areas like Malaga and Alicante remain mild and sunny, hovering around 17°C (63°F), while the northern regions and central highlands can be chilly and wet. It’s also ski season in the Sierra Nevada and Pyrenees!

Tips for Choosing When to Visit

  • If you want to avoid extreme heat, opt for late spring or early autumn.

  • For the best beach weather, July and August are unbeatable—but book early!

  • If you prefer sightseeing without the crowds, March, April, September, and October are ideal months.

Regardless of when you visit, Spain’s incredible diversity ensures there’s always something special waiting for you. Buen viaje!
