Internal Medicine with Sanitas
This is the specialist you see when nobody can tell you which specialist you need.
What internal medicine is, and how it differs from a GP
An internist is a specialist in adult medicine as a whole, rather than in one organ. They are the doctor you see when the problem does not fit neatly into one box.
A GP is your first port of call for everyday illness and manages your care over time. An internist goes deeper on complicated cases: several conditions interacting, medications clashing, symptoms across different systems, or a puzzle nobody has solved.
Think of it as the difference between a good all-rounder and a specialist in complexity.
When it is the right choice
Fatigue, weight loss or fever that has gone on for weeks with no explanation. Several long-term conditions at once, where treating one affects another. A pile of test results that have not been pulled together. Someone older on many different medications who needs the whole picture reviewing.
It is also the sensible starting point when you genuinely do not know which specialist you need. Rather than guessing between a cardiologist and a pulmonologist for breathlessness, an internist works out where it belongs and refers on.
A note for people new to Spain
If you have arrived without a full set of records, or your medical history is spread across two countries and two languages, an internist is a good way to get everything reviewed in one go and put on a proper footing. That first thorough appointment often saves several wasted ones.
Waiting periods
None on consultations. Standard blood tests are covered immediately, complex diagnostic tests after 6 months.
See every Sanitas waiting period in one place, including how switching from another insurer waives nearly all of them.

Language at the appointment
This is the specialty where language matters most of any on the site, because the entire appointment is you explaining a complicated history and the doctor asking follow-up questions. Do not compromise on this one if you can avoid it. Ask us and we will check who is near you and what languages they work in.
What you pay
Nothing at the clinic on a no-co-payment plan. A small fixed amount per visit on a co-payment plan.
