What you can use a nursing centre for
More than most policyholders realise, and all of it without seeing a doctor first.
Injections. If you have been prescribed something that needs injecting, a nurse will do it rather than you managing alone.
Dressings and wound care. After an operation or an injury, having a dressing changed properly and the wound checked.
Removing stitches after surgery.
Blood pressure checks, particularly useful if you are being monitored or have had medication changed.
Blood tests, where a doctor has requested them.
Post-operative care generally, including drains and catheters.
Why it is worth knowing about in advance
People discover nursing services at the worst moment – a wound that needs looking at, on a weekend, with no idea where to go. Knowing your nearest centre before that happens turns a stressful afternoon into a short errand.
It is also considerably quicker than a doctor's appointment for anything a nurse can handle, and it does not use up a consultation.
Home nursing
For people who cannot easily travel – after major surgery, or where mobility is limited – nursing at home is included on every Sanitas plan, on a doctor's prescription. Availability varies by area, so check yours before you need it rather than assuming.

Nurses are listed in all 50 provinces. Many general clinics also have a nurse without being listed separately, so it is worth asking at your usual clinic too.

What you pay
Nothing at the centre on a no-co-payment plan. A small fixed amount per visit on a co-payment plan, usually lower than a doctor's appointment.
