Getting a COVID or Flu Test in Spain: Pharmacies, PCR and Costs

Whether you are feeling unwell, need a clear result before travelling, or just want peace of mind, getting a COVID or flu test in Spain is straightforward. Tests are widely available at pharmacies, private clinics and laboratories across the country, usually with no appointment and no referral needed. This guide covers where to go, the types of test on offer, roughly what they cost, and how to get your results in English.

Where to get a test in Spain

There are three easy options, depending on how quickly you need a result and how much you want to spend:

  • Your local pharmacy (farmacia). Most pharmacies sell rapid antigen self-test kits over the counter, and many can carry out a supervised antigen test on the spot. Look for the green cross sign – staff in tourist and expat areas often speak English.
  • Private clinics and laboratories. Private diagnostic labs and clinics offer both antigen and PCR testing, usually same day or next day, with an official certificate you can use for travel.
  • At home. An antigen self-test kit from a farmacia lets you test yourself in about 15 minutes.

Types of test, and what they are called in Spanish

Knowing the Spanish terms makes it much easier to ask for the right thing at the counter:

  • Antigen test (prueba de antígenos) – the rapid, roughly 15-minute test. Cheap, fast, and good at detecting an active infection when you have symptoms.
  • PCR test (PCR) – the laboratory test. More sensitive, and the one usually required for travel certificates; results typically come back within 24 to 48 hours.
  • Flu test (test de la gripe) – many pharmacies and clinics now offer a combined COVID-and-flu test that checks for both from a single swab, handy when the symptoms overlap.

How much does a test cost?

Prices vary by region and provider, but as a rough guide:

  • A pharmacy antigen self-test kit typically costs only a few euros.
  • A supervised antigen test at a pharmacy or clinic is usually inexpensive, often somewhere around €10 to €30.
  • A PCR test at a private lab is the priciest option, commonly in the region of €60 to €120 – more if you need an express result or an official travel certificate.

Always confirm the current price and exactly what is included before you book, especially if you need a certificate for travel.

Getting tested in English

In the expat hubs along the coast, on the islands and in the major cities, many pharmacies and private clinics can issue results and certificates in English. If English is essential – for a travel document, say – it is worth a quick call ahead to confirm.

Do you need a test to travel?

Testing rules for travel change over time and differ by destination and airline. Before you fly, always check the current entry requirements for the country you are heading to and the rules of your airline, rather than relying on older advice.

How private health insurance makes it simpler

A private health plan takes much of the hassle out of getting checked over. With Sanitas health insurance you get fast access to private doctors and diagnostic tests, plus a digital GP through the app who can assess your symptoms by video and tell you whether a test is even worth doing – without leaving the house. If you do need lab work, it is carried out within the Sanitas network of clinics, with English-speaking support from our office throughout.

It is the difference between hunting around for a test when you feel rough and having a doctor and a lab a phone-tap away.

This article is general information, not medical advice. If you are unwell or unsure which test you need, ask your pharmacist or a doctor.
