Spain's Traffic Authority Clarifies Rules For Wearing Masks In Cars

Spain’s General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) has set the record straight on wearing masks in cars.
Over the last few days, rumours have been spreading that not wearing a mask inside a car could leave you facing a fine.
The DGT has however added a statement to their social media pages clarifying that these rumours are incorrect and that the action of not wearing a mask when inside a vehicle, is not a punishable act.
The statement explains that there is no article in the Traffic and Road Safety Law nor any regulations related to it, that says not wearing a face mask or removing it when in a vehicle is a violation of the law.
The shared statement explained that “the use of the mask is a matter of public health and a sanitary measure” which means that the DGT has no rights to enforce it. As “It is not a traffic offence” it isn’t punishable, so a fine cannot be issued and you can’t lose points on your driver's licence.
Twitter users raised doubts about the DGT tweet, as it states that it is not necessary to wear a face mask inside the vehicle if you are driving alone or with a passenger who lives with you. You should, however, take a mask with you if you are sharing a car with people who do not live at the same address as you.
In addition, it is mandatory to wear a mask when travelling in a taxi or on any other public transport such as a bus or on the subway.
As stated on the Presidency of Government website,(in articles 6 and 31.2 of Law 2/2021, March 29, on urgent prevention, containment and coordination measures to face the health crisis caused by Covid-19), not wearing a face mask on public transport is considered “a minor offence and will be sanctioned with a 100 euros fine”.
