Spain Sees Record Drop In Unemployment For July With 197,841 Fewer Registered

Spain has seen its biggest drop in unemployment for July, with 197,841 fewer people registered.

The figures represent a fall of 5.47% on the previous month, the largest monthly reduction the country has ever recorded.

According to the data published on Tuesday by the Ministry of Labour and Social Economy, it is the third successive month that Spain has seen a fall in its unemployment figures.

May saw one of the largest reductions with 129,378 people finding work, followed by even better numbers in June which saw a further drop of 167,000.

The Coronavirus pandemic has caused a huge amount of unemployment up and down the country, especially in the tourism and hospitality sectors which have been hit hardest.

July’s published figures show that it was the services sector that saw the biggest fall in unemployment, down by 133,658. Another record for the third successive month. There were 13,000 fewer unemployed within the Industry sector; 10,000 in Construction and almost 9,000 less in Agriculture.

In addition to the record unemployment figures, a further 91,451 registered as social security affiliates bringing the total number of employed registered in Spain to 19,591,728. This breaks the previous record of 19.53 million set in July 2019.

It means that there are now 3,416,498 people out of work in Spain, 365,636 fewer than at the same point last year.

Unemployment by Autonomous Community

In terms of regional unemployment figures, it was Andalucia which saw the biggest reduction with 69,159. Catalunya also saw a reduction of 37,548 with the Canaries registering 20,374 fewer people out of work.

However, the ministry data shows that there are six regions that have seen fewer unemployed since the beginning of the pandemic. These are Galicia (-14,295), Extremadura (-9,744), Asturias (-7,775), Castilla La Mancha (-6,986), Balearics (-4,738), Melilla (-2,226) and Cantabria (-996).

Unemployment by Age and Sex

In absolute terms, unemployment decreased more in the month of July for women with 104,891 fewer unemployed (-4.94%) compared to the previous month. The total number of women currently unemployed stands at 2,017,719.

The rate of unemployment in men was reduced by 92.950 (-6.23%) bringing the total to 1,398,779.

For those under the age of 25, the rate of unemployment fell by 36,926 or 12.34% compared to June. This brings the total number of unemployed under the age of 25 to 103,992.

Unemployment was also reduced in the group aged 25 and over, by 160,915 people (-4.85%).
