Spanish passport with flag Spaniards Face New UK Entry Requirements From October 1 Spain News

Spaniards visiting the UK will face new entry requirements from October 1.

The post-Brexit transitional agreement between the European Union, Spain and the UK which allowed EU nationals to travel to and from the UK with only their national identity documents (DNI) will come to an end.

However, from next month this will change with travellers requiring a valid passport instead.

From October, Spaniards who arrive in the UK and British nationals arriving in Spain will be treated as third-country citizens and therefore subject to Schengen area border controls. As a result, travellers may experience longer processing times.

Spain’s government website La Moncloa recently took the opportunity to remind citizens that from October 1, they will also need a visa in order to apply to work, study or start a business in the United Kingdom.

Any Spanish citizens who wish to drive in the UK with a Spanish or EU licence may continue to do so. However, if they plan on getting residency in the UK they will have to exchange their licence for the UK version, similar to the requirement currently in place for British nationals when living in Spain.

At the moment, UK nationals entering the EU for short stays of up to 90-days in any 180-day period are not obliged to be in the possession of a visa, although a visa is required in the event that they wish to work in Spain or another EU country.

With many thousands of second homeowners in Spain coming from the UK, many will be hoping that the 90-day restriction may eventually be lifted which would also have a positive impact on the Spanish economy.

Please remember that there are still restrictions in place as a result of the pandemic. This may include the requirement to provide a Covid test and complete a passenger locator form prior to arrival.

It was announced on Friday that as of October 4, travellers from Spain to England will no longer be required to take a pre-departure Covid-19 test or a day two PCR test.

The existing amber list which Spain was on has now been removed and will mean only a red list category for those countries deemed to pose the greatest risk.
