According to figures published on Wednesday, November 3, Spain’s social security system registered 102,474 (+0.52%) new affiliates in October, representing six consecutive months of positive growth.
In terms of accumulated numbers, it means that there has been an additional 642,539 workers added to the social security system since April this year.
In seasonally adjusted terms, it means the total number of people registered within the system now stands at 19,662,163.
In February 2020, just one month prior to the start of the pandemic, there were 19,479,814 in work. The latest figures mean that since the start of the pandemic, there are now an additional 182,349 people in work suggesting that the country is now fully on the road to economic recovery.

The services sector saw the biggest rise in the number of social security registrations with 98,737. This was followed by Agriculture (+6,110), Construction (+3,984) and Industry (+2,968).
In absolute terms, it was the Food and Beverages services that added the most affiliates, up by 25,046, followed by Employment-related services with 9,438 and Health services with 7,834 additional registrations.
The number of salaried workers grew by 95,344 workers, while the number of non-salaried workers has increased uninterrupted over the last 12 months with an additional 6,311.
Year-on-Year Growth
Over the past 12 months and without seasonal adjustment the number of affiliates has grown by 700,226 people. This represents an increase of 3.69%.
Looking at the country’s employment sectors, it was Hospitality that saw the largest increase, up by 14.23%, followed by Artistic, Recreational and Entertainment Activities (+11.70%) Information and Communications (+8.65%) and Professional Activities Scientific and Technical (+6.35%).
Nearly all of the countries autonomous regions saw a positive increase in the number of affiliate registrations in October with the Balearic Islands boasting the biggest rise, up 16.68% in the last 12 months.
Other regions that saw a significant rise were the Canaries (+4.26%), the Valencian Community (+4.02%) and the Community of Madrid (+3.98%).
The one exception was the autonomous city of Melilla which experienced a slight fall of 0.41%.
