Spanish Hotels Recover Pre-Pandemic Occupancy Levels Increasing Prices By 16.4% In July

Spain News

Hotels across Spain hit hard times during the pandemic, with closures during the harshest months leading to a loss of millions.

Recovery has since been steady and on Wednesday, the National Institute of Statistics (INE) published the Hotel Situation Survey that showed that in July, overnight stays in hotels across Spain totalled 42.3 million. A figure that is above pre-pandemic levels.

The survey showed that 26.7 million nights were occupied by foreigners, with more than a quarter of them being British.

According to the data, hotel prices have risen by 17.7 percent in three years. Figures show that the daily rate of Spanish hotels in July stood at 121.4 euros, compared to 103.14 euros in 2019.

It means that the Hotel Price Index rose 16.4% in July compared to the same month last year, accumulating 14 consecutive monthly increases.

Spain’s hotel prices have been increasing month by month since June of last year, and since February 2021, they have done so at a rate above 20 percent. This shows a recovery from the harsh times that were felt when Coivid hit in March 2020 and hotels were closed.

The autonomous communities of Navarra and Madrid had the highest increase in hotel prices compared to July 2021, with 32.4 percent and 30.7 percent respectively.

As for favourite destinations, in July tourists favoured the regions of Andalusia, Catalonia and the Valencian Community. Andalusia had 24.4 percent of total overnight stays, Catalonia 15.5 percent and the Valencian Community 13.9 percent.

Madrid, Calvià and Barcelona were the tourist hotspots with the highest number of overnight stays during the month of July.

During the same month Santanyi proved to have the highest bed occupancy with a rate of 97.8 percent and Santa Margalida reached the highest weekend occupancy with the rate of 92.7%.
