International Tourists To Spain Spend 9,243 Million Euros In September Close To Pre-Pandemic Levels Spain News

Data shows that 7.8 million international tourists visited Spain during the month of September, spending 9,243 million euros on their travel and accommodation.

These figures equate to 88.4 percent of those who arrived in the same month back in 2019 prior to the pandemic. Visitor spending in September also reached 96 percent of that spent in the same year.

Reyes Maroto, the Minister of Industry, Commerce and Tourism drew attention to the fact that "the data confirms that in September the recovery trend in tourism activity was maintained, cutting the difference with 2019 even more than in August. Taking into account the current climate of general economic uncertainty and high inflation, these figures demonstrate the great resilience that Spain is showing as a destination, which continues to present positive prospects for the remainder of the year, as reflected by indicators such as airline schedules and reservations".

The number of international tourists who visited Spain during the first nine months of 2022, exceeded 55.9 million, 83.5 percent of the same period in 2019. Their spending reached 68,137 million euros which was 92.7 percent of the expenditure registered in 2019.

The average number of days they stayed in the country during that period increased from 7.1 to 7.5 days, with the average cost also growing from 1,098 euros to 1,219 euros, an increase of 11 percent.

During the month of September, visitors from the UK topped the tables with 1.8 million tourists. Germany followed close behind with 1.1 million and France with 932,255.

Once again UK tourists led the way with their level of spending, 21.2 percent of the total number spent. Germany came second with 14 percent and France followed with 8.4 percent of the total spent.

It was no different for the first nine-month period of this year when visitors from the UK had the highest accumulated spending, 20.2 percent of the total. Germany once again followed with an accumulated spend of 20.2 percent, whilst the accumulated spending from France was 9.6 percent.

In regards to the Spanish destinations that received the highest volume of tourists, the Balearic Islands were the firm favorite once again welcoming 1.9 million visitors. Catalonia was host to 1.65 million and Andalusia to 1.1 million.

Cantabria, Castilla-La Mancha and Asturias received more international tourists during September compared to the same month in 2019.

The autonomous communities of the main destinations that saw the highest tourist spending were the Balearic Islands with 22.8 percent of the total, Catalonia with 20.2 percent, and the Canary Islands with 13.9 percent of the total spent.
