Spain’s Granada Named Cheapest City Break Destination In Europe Spain News

Granada is the cheapest city break in Europe according to a study carried out by Omio, the transport booking website.

The study of 100 different cities in Europe, looked at which one was the most affordable and had the highest number of free attractions and activities, and the Andalusian city of Granada came out top.

With the current cost of living crisis affecting so many, the aim of the study was to ascertain which tourist destination was the best to visit on a reduced budget.

Its other aim was to show that a lot of money can be saved when holidaying if you think carefully about where to stay, organise your trip and take advantage of free offers and attractions that are available.

The Spanish city that sits on the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountain range got full marks for its availability of free Wifi hotspots, public drinking fountains, pubs and nightclubs, fast food menu prices and affordable guided tours.

A total of 112 free tourist attractions were found in Granada, along with access to 60 different emblematic places to visit and 10 free museums.

As for ‘paying’ attractions, a visit to the UNESCO-listed Moorish Alhambra will cost an adult 14 euros and the tourist bus just 9 euros.

According to the study, the average price of a bus ticket in Granada is 7 euros, with a regular 24-hour bus ticket costing just 1.40 euros. In Europe, the average price is 21 euros.

The lowest daily ticket that is available in Spain as a whole, can be found in Málaga at 1.35 euros.

Other cities in Spain that have 24-hour tickets for less than 3 euros are Pamplona at 1.35 euros, Murcia at 2.15 euros and Barcelona at 10.50 euros.

Eating and drinking out in the Andalusian city of Granada also proved to be cheap, with a meal for two in an average restaurant costing 50 euros. Whilst the average price of a beer is 2.50 euros and you get a free plate of tapas with it. Not bad when you consider that the average price for a beer in Europe is 4.91 euros.

In the study, Granada scored 100 percent to take the top spot, followed by Bruges in Belgium which scored 93.6 percent.

Spain as a whole has always been classed as a popular, cost-friendly holiday destination and this study proves that is most certainly the case as three other Spanish cities made the top ten for the cheapest city breaks in Europe.

Valencia came in at number four, scoring 55 for free tourist attractions. Seville was eighth with a whopping 108 and Malaga was ninth with 59.

When it comes to free museums Valencia has 12, Seville has 10 and Málaga has seven.

The popular city of Barcelona just narrowly missed a top 10 spot, coming in at number 11 of the cheapest cities in Europe.

Other Spanish cities made it onto the list of the top 100 cities to visit in Europe, they were Zaragoza which came in at number 17, Pamplona at number 22, Alicante at 31, Murcia at 40 and Madrid at 41.
