Spain Will Give Up To 150,000 Euros To SMEs That Implement A Four-Day Working Week

Spain News

Spain’s Ministry of Industry and Commerce has announced that they are set to reward small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs) that implement the four-day working week.

The Ministry said that between 60 and 70 businesses would receive up to 150,000 euros each, but would need to implement a minimum workday reduction of 10% which would need to be in place for at least two years.

Another condition would be that the employee's salary would need to be maintained.

The draft order was sent for public consultation in mid-June and is expected to be published in the coming days.

The pilot project is thought to have a budget of around 10 million euros according to the agreement which was made between the government and Más País in exchange for a study into a 32-hour work week.

It is believed that around 160 companies could benefit from the initial phase of the project benefiting around 3,000 employees.

The aim of the study is to see if a greater work-life balance can be achieved along with better physical and mental health and an improvement in staff productivity.

The government funding will compensate businesses for higher wage costs due to the reduction in working hours and to implement production processes and additional training measures to generate an improvement in productivity.
