Spanish Government Approves 200 Euro Food Cheque To Combat Cost Of Living Spain News

The Spanish government approved its latest anti-crisis measures on Tuesday, designed to combat the rising cost of living brought about by soaring inflation.

The latest measures which will come into force from January 1, will cost the government around 10,000 million Euros and provide economic support to millions of the country’s most vulnerable citizens.

The star attraction of the new package is a one-off payment of 200 Euros which will be paid to the lowest-income families to help them with the rising cost of living.

The government anticipates that around 4.3 million households will be eligible for the payment with an estimated cost of 840 million euros.

Who is eligible for the 200 euro payment?

Only those families with a gross income of less than 27,000 euros will benefit from the one-off payment. However, it is important to note that it is the whole family's income that is taken into consideration and not that of each individual.

Households will also need to have less than 75,000 euros in assets and must have habitual residence in Spain on December 31.

The savings and equity of the household will not include the value of their property if owned. However, bank accounts, savings, public debt, promissory notes, shares, bonds, annuities, vehicles, artwork, antiques, and other assets may be considered. See a full list on the tax agency website.

Government sources have also confirmed that single-member households will also be eligible for the 200 Euro payment as long as they meet all the eligibility requirements.

Although the exact details are yet to be published, it is expected that the application for the 200 Euro payment will be made in the same way as the last grant which was issued in July last year.

Who is not eligible for the payment?

Unfortunately, not everyone will be eligible for the payment.

For example, those who are currently receiving a pension or the Minimum Vital Income will not receive the financial assistance. IMV has already been extended for 2023 with pensions also set to be increased by 8.47% next year.

When can you apply for the payment?

The cheque can be requested between February 15 and March 31, 2023, via the tax agency’s website.

Applicants will need to include their bank account details so the one-off payment can be made.

In the event that the application is rejected, the applicant will be notified of the reasons and will have 10 days to present any required documentation to support their claim.

The Government also announced on Tuesday that from January 1, it would be scrapping VAT on basic foods such as milk, bread, eggs, cheese, cereals, and fruit and vegetables.
