Unfair Check-In Practices By Ryanair Spark Outrage In Spain

Spain News

Spain's prominent consumer group has accused Ryanair of wrongdoing once again. The Organisation of Consumers and Users (OCU) has criticised the budget airline for making passengers pay extra fees when their online check-in systems fail.

According to the OCU, many passengers, especially those booking through third-party agents, encounter errors when trying to check in online via the Ryanair app or website. As a result, they are forced to visit the airport counter, where Ryanair charges them between 30 and 50 euros for a printed boarding pass. Additionally, passengers who purchase tickets through other platforms like eDreams are required to provide photo identification, which the OCU deems unnecessary.

This is not the first time Spanish authorities have scrutinised Ryanair's practices. In the past, the airline faced legal action for workers' rights violations during cabin crew strikes and was investigated by the Spanish Ministry of Consumers Affairs for alleged irregularities in baggage policies and seat allocation.

According to the OCU, who sees this latest issue as a new problem, said that “it is clearly a new abuse by the company, which adds to those already reported about, which the justice system clearly agreed with us.

The organisation has already approached Ryanair, demanding an end to this practice. If the company does not comply, the OCU plans to file a formal complaint with the General of Consumer Affairs.
