In a strategic move to bolster tourism and strengthen economic ties with North America, Acting Minister of Industry, Commerce, and Tourism, Hector Gomez, has unveiled plans to extend the direct flight between Malaga and New York throughout the entire year.

This bold initiative follows last year's successful bid by Costa del Sol, which outperformed Seville to secure this vital air connection with the Big Apple. Mr. Gomez envisions Malaga becoming a quintessential "reference destination" for North American tourists, enhancing the region's global appeal.

While acknowledging the flourishing state of tourism in Malaga, Minister Gomez emphasised the imperative need for unwavering support from various administrative bodies, including central, regional, and local governments. He stressed that the administration's backing is indispensable to sustaining the momentum of the rapidly growing tourism sector.

The relationship between Andalucia and President Biden has been described as exceptionally promising by Minister Gomez, foreseeing abundant opportunities on the horizon. He also revealed that prominent travel entities, such as Turespana, and even the Secretary of State for Tourism, are eager to transform the New York flights from a seasonal offering to a year-round service, aligning with the region's aspirations.

The surge in tourism numbers, particularly in overnight stays, has been nothing short of spectacular in the Costa del Sol this year, surpassing the pre-pandemic figures of 2019.
However, Malaga is not the sole city experiencing an upsurge in demand. The Spanish Tourism Ministry is confident in the forthcoming launch of a new connection between the Valencian Community and New York by the next summer season.

Nevertheless, Minister Gomez remains upbeat about the tourism outlook for 2023 and beyond, describing it as "extraordinary." With unwavering confidence, he concluded his statement by underscoring that Malaga "is demonstrating its strength as a very important destination, and it is not unreasonable to think, say and affirm that tourism is the sector that is pulling a lot of the economy in our country and also in Andalucia and Malaga."
