How to Get a Blood Test in Spain with Sanitas, and What It Costs

How to Get a Blood Test in Spain with Sanitas, and What It Costs

A blood test in Spain costs from about €34 for a basic panel at a private clinic, and nothing at all on Sanitas Mas Salud when a Sanitas doctor requests it. Routine clinical analysis is a simple diagnostic test, so it is covered from the day your policy starts on every Sanitas plan. It costs €0 on Sanitas Mas Salud, €12 per test on Sanitas Accede, Avanza and Unico, and one service on the copayment ladder on Mas Salud Optima and Plus. Your Sanitas GP or specialist prescribes it, you give the sample at your usual Sanitas clinic or a network laboratory, and the report arrives in the app.

This guide covers what a blood test costs with and without insurance, and how to get one through Sanitas, with booking and results in the app. It then covers what counts as clinical analysis, what is not covered, and how to prepare.

How to get a blood test with Sanitas

  1. See a Sanitas GP or specialist. In person, or by video or telephone consultation in the app. The doctor issues a written prescription listing the tests; a paper slip (volante) is only printed if you ask for one or are giving the sample outside a Sanitas centre. Ordinary blood work needs no separate authorisation.
  2. Give the sample. Most members give blood at their usual Sanitas clinic's extraction point rather than at a standalone laboratory; the analysis happens behind the scenes. Many extraction points are walk-in in the morning, and fasting may be required.
  3. Or have it done at home. A home visit for a blood test is not part of the Blua digital services. Sanitas sells it as a separate paid add-on, two home visits per insured person a year, and Sanitas Unico includes its own home analysis service. You still need the doctor's prescription.
  4. Get the results in the app. You are notified in the app when the report is ready, can download the PDF there or in the web portal, and your doctor reviews it with you.

If you use a non-network laboratory on a reimbursement plan, keep the invoice and the report and submit them through the app to claim back within your plan's limits.

Sanitas lab tests: booking and results in the app

Everything runs through the app. You book the GP or specialist there, the prescription is issued there, the appointment at the extraction point shows there, and the laboratory report is uploaded there as a PDF you can download and share. Private laboratories advertise 24 to 48 hours for a routine panel; tests that need a specialist report take longer, and the app notifies you the moment the report is ready. Our guide to digital GP consultations in the app covers the video and telephone consultations in detail.

What counts as clinical analysis?

Clinical analysis (laboratorio de analisis clinicos) covers routine and advanced lab work used to diagnose, monitor, or screen medical conditions. Typical categories include:

  • Haematology: full blood count, coagulation profile, ferritin, B12/folate.
  • Biochemistry: glucose, kidney/liver function, lipids, electrolytes, thyroid.
  • Immunology: autoimmune markers, allergies, serology.
  • Microbiology: cultures and sensitivities (urine, throat, stool).
  • Endocrine & hormones: TSH/FT4, reproductive hormones, cortisol.
  • Urinalysis & stool tests: dipstick, microscopy, occult blood, calprotectin.
  • Tumour markers / special tests: where clinically indicated.

What is not covered

On Mas Salud, Avanza and Top Quantum a short list of tests is excluded from clinical analysis: dysbiosis tests, ALCAT food sensitivity tests, qualitative antibody screening kits and multiple PCR (polymerase chain reaction) panels. Genetic studies are covered only for a patient who already has symptoms. The study must be needed to diagnose a disease that other tests cannot or to decide treatment, and the chance of reaching a diagnosis must be at least ten per cent. They need prior authorisation from Sanitas after review of the medical report. BRCA1 and BRCA2 (breast cancer gene) testing is included only for specific indications. Examples are two or more close relatives with breast cancer before 50, a first-degree relative who carries the mutation, a man with breast cancer, breast cancer before 50, or ovarian cancer. Sanitas Accede and Sanitas Unico do not cover genetic studies. Tests for a condition you had before the policy started are assessed as pre-existing conditions.

Is there a waiting period for blood tests?

No. Blood and urine tests are simple diagnostic tests and are covered from day one on every plan, alongside consultations and X-rays. The six-month wait for a new member applies to complex diagnostic tests such as MRI and CT scans and PET scans. The full list of Sanitas waiting periods is in its own guide.

Preparation tips

  • Fasting: For lipid & glucose profiles, 8-12 hours fasting is often requested.
  • Hydration: Drink water unless told otherwise; dehydration can skew results.
  • Medication & supplements: Ask your doctor which to pause before testing.
  • Timing: Some hormones (e.g., cortisol) are time-sensitive, so attend at the advised hour.

Where to get a blood test in the Sanitas network

If you want a dedicated laboratory rather than your usual clinic, our directory lists the clinical analysis laboratories and diagnostic centres in the Sanitas network by province. Sanitas also sells a home services add-on for those who would rather not travel, and Sanitas Unico includes home visits.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a blood test cost in Spain?

Privately, a basic blood and urine panel costs from €34 in Madrid (Privaclinic's list price) and from about €80 at most clinics, with a wider 23-parameter panel from €70. With Sanitas a doctor-requested blood test costs nothing on Sanitas Mas Salud, €12 per test on Sanitas Accede, Avanza and Unico. On Mas Salud Optima and Plus it counts as one service on the plan's copayment ladder.

How long do blood test results take in Spain?

Private clinics advertise results for a routine panel within 24 to 48 hours; tests that need a specialist report take longer. With Sanitas you are notified in the app the moment the report is ready, download it there, and your doctor goes through it with you.

Can I just ask for a blood test?

Privately, yes: many Spanish clinics will run a panel without a prescription, though they advise one. On the policy a Sanitas GP or specialist prescribes the test, which is what the laboratory needs to bill Sanitas rather than you. Booking a GP appointment in the app is the quickest route.

Can you go to a pharmacy for a blood test?

Not for a laboratory panel. Many Spanish pharmacies run finger-prick tests on the spot for glucose, cholesterol or triglycerides, a few euros with results in minutes, and sell self-test kits. They do not take a venous sample for a full clinical analysis. A proper panel means a clinic or a laboratory, or a home visit if your plan carries the Sanitas home services add-on or is Sanitas Unico.

Are blood tests covered from day one with Sanitas?

Yes. Routine clinical analysis is a simple diagnostic test with no waiting period on any Sanitas plan. The six-month wait applies to complex diagnostic tests: MRI, CT and PET scans, not blood or urine work.

Do I need a referral for a blood test with Sanitas?

Yes. A Sanitas GP or specialist prescribes the tests, in person or through a video or telephone consultation in the app. A paper slip (volante) is only printed if you ask for one or give the sample outside a Sanitas centre. Ordinary blood work needs no separate authorisation; genetic studies do.

Are genetic tests covered by Sanitas?

Only in specific cases, and only on the plans that cover complex diagnostic tests. Mas Salud, Avanza and Top Quantum cover genetic studies for a patient who already has symptoms, with prior authorisation from Sanitas. The study must be needed to diagnose a disease that other tests cannot or to decide treatment, and the chance of a diagnosis must be at least ten per cent. BRCA1 and BRCA2 (breast cancer gene) testing is included only for specific indications, such as two or more close relatives with breast cancer before 50, a first-degree relative who carries the mutation, or ovarian cancer. Sanitas Accede and Sanitas Unico do not cover genetic studies.

Can I choose any laboratory?

Use a Sanitas network laboratory or the extraction point at your usual Sanitas clinic so the bill goes straight to Sanitas. On a reimbursement plan you can use a non-network laboratory and claim back within your limits.
