Price Of Bombona Gas Canisters In Spain Drops To 16.79 Euros Spain News

Following the latest review by the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge, the price of a butane canister in Spain has dropped once again to 16.79 euros.

Announced today, March 20 in the Official State Gazette (BOE), the new lower price will come into play tomorrow, March 21.

The retail price of LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gases) in 8 to 20-kilo cylinders, the kind most used in Spanish homes, is reviewed bi-monthly with the sale cost being dependent on the strength of the euro. The cost of freight or transport must then be added.

This month the euro has appreciated 3.3 percent on the dollar and the freight costs have dropped by 32.9 percent. Despite a 14.8 percent rise in raw material costs, the surplus stock has helped cushion the impact, resulting in a decrease in cost per bottle from 1.38 euros to 0.97 euros.

Over the last year, gas prices have experienced significant fluctuations. However, in Spain, the price of this energy source is subject to a maximum increase or decrease of 5 percent in each review to ensure market stability.

In June 2022, the Spanish Government froze the maximum price of the butane cylinder at 19.55 euros until June 30 this year. This regulation limits the highest prices at which liquefied petroleum gases, packed for cargos weighing 8 kilograms or more but less than 20 kilograms, can be sold.

The ceiling price limit of 19.55 euros was achieved on September 19. However, since then, there has been a decrease in gas prices by 14.12 percent.

Butane-rich bottled LPG is a mixture of hydrocarbons that serves as a substitute for natural gas. It is particularly popular in towns and urban areas without access to natural gas networks.

According to the Spanish Government's estimates, approximately 64.5 million LPG canisters are used each year. However, despite being a source of energy, its demand has declined significantly, dropping by over 25 percent between 2010 and 2021.
