DGT To Send Driving Licence Expiration Notices By Post Spain News

From the 5th of February, Spain’s motoring authority Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT) will begin notifying drivers via post when their driving licences are due to be renewed.

The move is to help reduce the number of drivers in Spain who are currently driving on the country’s roads with an invalid driver's licence (Permiso de Conducción).

It has been estimated by the DGT that around 10% of drivers are taking to the roads each day with licences that are out of date. An offence which will usually mean a fine of €200 if caught.

The DGT expects to send out approximately 2.7 Million of the notices during 2019, which will be received by drivers around 2 months before the licence is due to be renewed. If your Spanish licence expires in March, you will receive the notification in February.

The good news is that drivers will not have to visit their nearest provincial traffic headquarters to renew the licence. However, you will need to visit one of the many driver recognition centers and present your national identity document, passport or residence card and undertake a simple medical examination.

Once you have completed the test, you will receive a provisional licence, which lasts for a maximum of 90 days. During this time, you will receive your new licence by post.

Another good reason to make sure that if you have moved home, that you notify the DGT of the change so you can receive all correspondence.

For licences with the codes AM, A1, A2, A, and B, licences should be renewed every 10 years up to the age of 65 years and every 5 years for those older than 65.

For professional licences with codes C, C1, D, D1, EC, EC1, ED and ED1, licences should be renewed every 5 years up to the age of 65 and every 3 years thereafter.

To renew your licence, you will need to pay the renewal fee, which is currently €24.10.

If you are 70 or over, renewing the licence is free. If you are approaching 70, there are discounts depending on how far away you are from you 70th birthday.

They are:-

From 4 years - €19.30
From 3 years - €14.50
From 2 years - €9.70
From 1 year or less - €4.90
