What is Sanitas Total Protection?
Sanitas Total Protection (Protección Total) is cover for the self-employed that comes included, never as an add-on, with Sanitas Professional and Sanitas Professional Plus. When you are in hospital or signed off work for more than 72 hours, Sanitas pays one monthly premium, up to 3 premiums or €200 a year, and sends help at home.
HealthPlan Spain is an authorised Sanitas agent (agent code 22395) in Marbella that arranges Sanitas Professional and Sanitas Professional Plus in English, at the same price as buying direct from Sanitas.

What Total Protection covers
Total Protection (Proteccion Total) comes included with the Sanitas Professional plans, the cover for self-employed professionals. If you are hospitalised or temporarily unable to work, it keeps the essentials covered - for you and your family.
The cover applies when you are hospitalised for more than 72 hours or in a situation of temporary disability for more than 72 hours. Its centrepiece is payment protection: Sanitas pays your current month's health insurance premium, so your cover continues while you cannot earn. On top of that you get practical support for work and home - help around the house and with childcare, home physiotherapy, a taxi service to keep you mobile for work, and IT help to set up a workstation at home.
It is included for everyone insured on a Sanitas Professional plan, with no waiting periods. It does not cover claims caused by an illness that existed before the insurance was arranged. Payment protection covers up to 3 monthly premiums, or €200, a year and applies to the policyholder up to age 75. The services apply in Spain.
Included as standard: Total Protection comes free with the Sanitas Professional and Professional Plus plans - there is nothing extra to add or pay - and it applies to everyone insured on the policy.

Do I need to add Total Protection?
No - it comes included free with the Sanitas Professional plans, so there is nothing extra to add or pay. It applies to everyone insured on the policy.
Can Sanitas Total Protection be added to other Sanitas plans?
No. Sanitas Total Protection is only available with the self-employed plans, Sanitas Professional and Sanitas Professional Plus, where it is included free for everyone on the policy. Sanitas offers this cover to the self-employed only, so it cannot be added to a plan such as Sanitas Mas Salud. Everyone insured on a Sanitas Professional plan has the cover included, with nothing extra to add or pay.
Is there an age limit for Sanitas Total Protection?
Sanitas Total Protection is included for everyone insured on a Sanitas Professional plan, but it does not cover claims caused by an illness that existed before the insurance was arranged. The payment protection benefit, where Sanitas pays the current month's health insurance premium, applies to the policyholder up to age 75. The services apply in Spain.
How do I claim Sanitas Total Protection?
Tell us as soon as you know about the hospital stay or the sick leave: call HealthPlan Spain on (+34) 952 835 600 or email info@healthplanspain.com, and we open the claim with Sanitas for you. Temporary incapacity must be certified by a doctor in the social security system or similar, and it counts from the date on that certificate. Your premiums must be up to date to use the services. Send us the sick note or the hospital admission report with your claim.
Does Sanitas Total Protection work if I fall ill or have an accident abroad?
Yes, for insured people living in Spain the cover applies even if the illness or accident happens outside Spain. The services themselves, such as home help, taxis and home physiotherapy, are provided only in Spain.
Does Sanitas Total Protection replace Social Security sick pay for autonomos?
No, Total Protection sits on top of the public temporary incapacity benefit paid by your mutua, not instead of it. For an ordinary illness, the public benefit is 60% of your contribution base from the fourth to the twentieth day and 75% from the twenty-first. Total Protection refunds your Sanitas premium and sends practical help at home.
